How Business Applications Have Become the New Competitive Battleground for Enterprise Teams in 2026

Microsoft 365 Copilot has 15 million paid enterprise seats worldwide, and seat growth is up more than 160% year on year. More than 90% of the Fortune 500 now use it. Barclays rolled it out to 100,000 employees globally. Wipro has reached 95%+ monthly active usage with 7.5 million prompts per month and 250,000 FTE days saved per quarter. Infosys reports 91% monthly active users. TCS reports 86% of Copilot-licensed associates use AI in daily work.

The numbers are extraordinary. But behind them is a consistent finding: adoption that sticks — that generates genuine productivity gains rather than licence spend with no return — depends almost entirely on whether users have been trained to use these tools effectively. Microsoft's own data shows that organisations following disciplined rollout achieve 60–75% daily active use at 90 days. Without structured rollout, that number is 15–25% and rarely recovers.

The Microsoft 365 platform moved decisively into agentic territory in 2026. Copilot Cowork — now generally available — brings enterprise-ready AI for long-running, multi-step work into Microsoft 365 Copilot. Users can automate complex tasks across work data, business systems, and connected apps. Claude Sonnet 5 is now available within Microsoft 365 Copilot, alongside GPT 5.5, giving organisations model choice for different workflow types.

Power Apps has embedded Copilot and AI agents directly into business applications. New app skills including data entry, exploration, and visualisation are generally available. Copilot Studio — the low-code agent builder — now supports real-time voice agents in Dynamics 365 Contact Center. The Work IQ API gives developers access to Microsoft 365's intelligence layer through MCP and REST interfaces.

The implication for enterprise teams is significant: the Microsoft business application estate is no longer a productivity suite. It is becoming an agentic operations platform. The skills gap between organisations that understand how to configure, govern, and use these capabilities and those that are still running unguided pilots is widening every quarter.

Power Automate, Power Apps, and Copilot Studio together represent the most accessible agentic AI capability in the Microsoft stack — and the most underutilised. Most organisations that own Power Platform licences have a handful of enthusiastic citizen developers and a large population of staff who have never opened Power Automate. That is a significant missed opportunity.

The skills required to leverage Power Platform well are not deep technical skills — they are process awareness, automation thinking, and familiarity with the platform's capabilities. For business analysts, operations teams, and process owners, Power Platform training consistently generates some of the fastest measurable returns of any technology investment.
