Digital Sustainability Introduction is a broad overview course suitable for any professional who wants to understand the environmental impact of digital technology. Digital Sustainability for Developers is tailored specifically to software engineers and covers practical techniques for writing and deploying more energy-efficient code and systems. Digital Sustainability for Business Analysts covers sustainability considerations from a requirements, process, and decision-making perspective. All three courses are available as scheduled classroom sessions in London, as live online instructor-led training, or as customised onsite programmes for teams.
Digital sustainability refers to the practice of designing, building, and operating digital products, services, and infrastructure in a way that minimises their environmental impact — particularly their energy consumption and associated carbon emissions. The digital sector is responsible for a significant and growing share of global electricity consumption and carbon emissions, driven by data centres, network infrastructure, and end-user devices. It covers the environmental impact of digital technology — including the carbon footprint of data centres, cloud computing, networks, and devices — how to measure and estimate the carbon impact of digital products and services, the principles of sustainable digital design, an overview of relevant standards and frameworks such as the Green Software Foundation's Software Carbon Intensity specification, and how organisations can begin developing a digital sustainability strategy. It is suited to anyone in a technology, product, or business role who wants to understand the environmental dimension of digital work.
The Digital Sustainability for Developers course is a one-day programme specifically designed for software engineers, DevOps engineers, and cloud architects. It covers the carbon cost of code and infrastructure decisions — including how algorithm efficiency, data transfer volumes, storage choices, and cloud region selection affect energy consumption. It addresses techniques for writing more energy-efficient code, designing carbon-aware applications that shift workloads to times or regions with lower carbon intensity, measuring software carbon intensity using established frameworks, optimising cloud infrastructure for sustainability, and integrating sustainability considerations into development and deployment workflows. Developers leave with practical, actionable techniques they can apply to their current projects.
The Digital Sustainability for Business Analysts course is a one-day programme covering how business analysts can embed sustainability considerations into requirements gathering, process design, and solution evaluation. It covers how to identify and document the environmental impact of proposed digital solutions, how to include sustainability criteria in requirements specifications and acceptance criteria, how to evaluate trade-offs between functionality, performance, and environmental impact, how to work with stakeholders to set digital sustainability objectives, and how sustainability considerations fit within broader ESG (environmental, social, and governance) reporting obligations. It is suited to business analysts, product owners, and requirements specialists who want to ensure sustainability is considered as a first-class concern in the solutions they specify.
The Green Software Foundation (GSF) is a non-profit organisation established by Microsoft, GitHub, Thoughtworks, Accenture, and other technology organisations to build a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tooling, and best practices for green software. It has developed the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) specification — a methodology for calculating the carbon emissions of software systems — and the Green Software Practitioner certification. JBI's digital sustainability courses draw on the GSF's frameworks and principles, ensuring that delegates learn approaches that are grounded in emerging industry standards rather than informal guidance. As digital sustainability becomes a regulatory and reporting requirement for more organisations, familiarity with GSF frameworks is increasingly relevant for technology professionals.
