Jewellery company improves software development lifecycle with Code Review courses

An international jewellery firm contacted JBI training to run a session on code review for a group of employees at a variety of stages of their careers.

The intention of providing the code review course was to generate more standardisation of the coding produced by the company. At the time, the company did not carry this standardisation because of the range of experience within the coding team and that younger and older members were taught to code differently, which lead to a conflict in techniques and styles whilst generating shared code. This lead to the code for certain projects to be difficult to follow when reading it.

The code review training course solves the issue of experience by ensuring that experienced members of a team will become mentors the younger members because conversation must be facilitated for code review to occur. Furthermore, with the modernisation of coding, the younger employees may teach the old dog some new tricks or with fresh eyes find spots for improvement in existing codes. Furthermore, the code review training will fix the conflict of styles because, through communication, a common coding style can be agreed between employees. The code review also ensures the quality of coding is maintained by reviewing potential pitfalls and preventing time required to clean up mistakes in the future.  

JBI contacted the firm in collaboration with the instructor to finalise the tailored course content for the training day. This involved the firm providing some of their own projects that could be reviewed as exercises to ensure maximum engagement and understanding from the delegates. The highlights of the course included:

• Discussing what code review is and why it is an important process in order to get all the delegates on the same page
• Demonstrating how to complete a code review through a step by step process and tools for code review
• Describing 12 best practices for code review

There were 8 delegates who took part in the training course, which was held virtually over Zoom. Feedback that was returned to JBI following the completion of the training was very positive and specified the knowledge and experience of the trainer:
